Wisconsin Dells Fly Fishing

WORLD-CLASS FISHING ON THE RIVER THAT SHAPED THE DELLS.

THE RIVER THAT MADE THIS PLACE

Looking for things to do in the Wisconsin Dells that go beyond the waterparks? You're already standing next to one of the finest fishing rivers in the Midwest.

The Wisconsin River is what carved the dramatic sandstone bluffs, towering rock formations, and winding channels that make the Dells one of the most visited destinations in the Midwest. It's been flowing through this landscape for thousands of years — and it holds some of the finest fishing in the state.

Black Earth Angling Co. offers guided fishing trips on the Wisconsin River throughout the Wisconsin Dells, putting you on the same water that shaped the scenery you came here to see. Whether you're visiting the Dells for a weekend or looking for a genuinely unique outdoor activity in the area, a guided day on the Wisconsin River is unlike anything else you'll find here.

WHAT A GUIDED TRIP LOOKS LIKE

You'll spend the day on the Wisconsin River with an experienced guide, fishing from a jet boat or wet wading the golden sandbars that stretch through the river's wide, shallow channels. Your guide handles the instruction, the gear, and all the local knowledge built from years on this water.

The river changes character above and below the Dells. We fish both stretches, choosing the best water based on the season, the conditions, and what your group is after. Full-day trips include a freshly prepared riverside lunch. Half-day options are available for groups working around a Dells itinerary.

No fishing experience required. We guide complete beginners every day.

The Crash

A Natural Phenomenon

Wisconsin River System

ABOUT
During a specific window each summer, the Wisconsin River produces one of the most extraordinary fishing events in freshwater. The Crash is a topwater smallmouth feeding frenzy where fish corral massive schools of baitfish on the surface in explosive, school-wide blitzes. It only happens here, on this river. If you're visiting the Dells in the summer, this is worth building your trip around.

Pike & Musky

Wisconsin River System

ABOUT
Fall on the Wisconsin River brings out the apex predators. Pike and musky move aggressively as water temps drop, and targeting them on the fly is one of the most exciting things you can do with a rod in your hand. If you're visiting the Dells area in September or October, this is the trip.

"Had a glorious morning fishing on the WI River with Kyle and my kids (8 & 10). Kyle's adept read of our fishing party allowed him to provide just the right balance of instruction and sandbar play to keep everyone entertained. A memorable experience."

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Yes, and most visitors don't know it. The Wisconsin River runs directly through the Dells and holds exceptional populations of smallmouth bass, pike, musky, and more. We guide the river both above and below the city, putting you on world-class water that's minutes from wherever you're staying. Wisconsin Dells fishing is genuinely one of the most underrated experiences in the area.

  • Not at all. We guide complete beginners every day and tailor everything to your group. If your kids have never held a fishing rod, that's perfectly fine — we'll take care of the instruction from the first cast.

  • Yes. We love taking families out and regularly guide kids and adults together. Let us know the ages in your group when you reach out so we can plan the right experience. The Wisconsin River's wide sandbars and shallow stretches make it a genuinely enjoyable day for everyone regardless of fishing experience. Space is limited in our boats, the earlier you can plan a family outing the more likely we can accomodate.

  • Half-day trips are 4 hours. Full-day trips are 8 hours and include a freshly prepared streamside lunch. If you're working around a Dells itinerary, the half-day option is easy to fit into a bigger trip.

  • A Wisconsin fishing license for anyone 16 and older, sunscreen, and clothes you don't mind getting wet. We provide rods, flies, tackle, and instruction. Everything else is handled.

  • Summer is peak season — June through August is when smallmouth fishing is at its best and the river is at its most beautiful. The Crash phenomenon is worth planning around if you can. Fall is excellent for pike and musky. Spring brings early season trout opportunities on nearby Driftless spring creeks if you want to combine experiences.

  • Absolutely. The Driftless Region's spring creeks are within easy reach of the Dells area. If your group wants to experience both the Wisconsin River and the Driftless on the same trip, we can help you plan it. Get in touch and we'll put together the right itinerary.

  • As early as possible. Summer dates — especially June through August — fill fast, often before the season starts. If you have a specific window in mind, don't wait. We'd rather help you plan early than tell you we're full.
