Fly Fishing Near Chicago

THREE HOURS FROM CHICAGO. A WORLD AWAY FROM EVERYTHING ELSE.

A SHORT DRIVE. A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WORLD.

Most Chicago anglers don't realize what's sitting three hours north. Wisconsin's Driftless Region — spring-fed limestone creeks loaded with wild brown and brook trout — and the Lower Wisconsin River, one of the finest and most scenic warmwater fisheries in the Midwest, are both within easy reach of the Chicago area. No flights. No gear shipping. Just a drive through the countryside and a day on water that feels nothing like anything near the city.

Black Earth Angling Co. has been guiding these waters for over a decade. We guide Driftless trout trips, Wisconsin River smallmouth floats, and multi-day fish camps — all tailored to your skill level, your goals, and your schedule.

Lower Wisconsin River

ABOUT
The Lower Wisconsin River is 92.3 miles of un-dammed, free-flowing water and in summer it produces one of the most extraordinary fishing phenomena in freshwater. The Crash is a topwater smallmouth feeding frenzy unique to this river, and it has to be seen to be believed. Beyond that window, the river offers scenic floats through sandstone bluffs, golden sandbars, and hard-fighting fish all season long.

ABOUT
For the Chicago angler who wants more than a day trip. Crash Camp, Trout Camp, and the Sandbar Season are our multi-day overnight experiences — guided fishing, chef-prepared meals, and time on the water that a single day can't give you. These are the trips people come back for every year. Want to plan something tailored to your group, we are the folks to make it happen.

Pike & Musky

Wisconsin River System

ABOUT
For the angler chasing something bigger. The Wisconsin River and surrounding waters hold pike and musky, and targeting them on the fly is one of the most exciting things you can do with a rod in your hand. Fall is prime time — if you're driving up from Chicago in September or October, this is worth building a trip around.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • No. We guide complete beginners regularly and build the instruction around your starting point. The Driftless spring creeks and the Wisconsin River are both excellent places to learn — and we'll make sure you leave with skills you can actually use on your own.

  • Absolutely. An early start from Chicago gets you on the water by mid-morning with a full day ahead. Many of our Chicago clients make it a day trip — others stay overnight and book two days back to back. Either way works, and we'll help you figure out what makes the most sense for your schedule.

  • Spring through fall — April through October. Spring brings Driftless hatches and some of the finest dry fly fishing in the Midwest. Summer is peak Wisconsin River smallmouth season and when The Crash occurs. Fall brings streamer fishing and brown trout that are more aggressive than any other time of year. Honestly, every season has something worth driving for.

  • We'll send a full packing list after booking. The essentials are a Wisconsin fishing license, sunscreen, and clothes you don't mind getting wet. We handle rods, flies, tackle, and instruction — and full-day trips include a freshly prepared streamside lunch.

  • Yes. We regularly guide groups and can accommodate up to 6 anglers across multiple guides and boats. Get in touch for group availability and pricing — larger groups are some of our favorite days on the water. Groups larger than 6 anglers are possible with extra lead time.

  • As early as possible. Summer dates — especially June through August — fill fast, often before the season starts. If you have a specific window in mind, don't wait. We'd rather help you plan early than tell you we're full.
