Fly Fishing Near Madison, Wisconsin
THE DRIFTLESS STARTS IN YOUR BACKYARD.
WORLD CLASS FLY FISHING. RIGHT OUTSIDE MADISON.
The famous Black Earth Creek runs just west of Madison — one of the most celebrated spring creeks in the Midwest and the water that gave Black Earth Angling Co. its name. From there, the Driftless Region unfolds for miles: limestone spring creeks, wooded coulees, and wild brown and brook trout that have been there long before anyone started calling it a destination.
Thirty minutes northwest is the Lower Wisconsin River, one of the finest and most picturesque warmwater fisheries in the country.
Black Earth Angling Co. has been guiding this region for over a decade. This is our home water. Whether you're a Madison local who's been meaning to get out, a Driftless regular looking for a new guide, or someone who's never held a fly rod, we have a trip for you.
WHAT WE GUIDE
Driftless Trout
Under an hour from Madison
Southern Wisconsin Driftless Region
ABOUT
The famous Black Earth Creek begins just west of Madison, and the spring creeks of the Driftless Region extend from there for miles through the limestone hills of southwestern Wisconsin. This is walk-and-wade fishing for wild brown trout — technical, visual, and deeply satisfying. You're reading water, matching hatches, and earning every fish. Half and full-day guided trips available throughout the season, spring through fall. Perfect for beginners and experienced fly fishers alike.
Wisconsin River
Smallmouth
30 Minutes from Madison
Lower Wisconsin River
ABOUT
The Lower Wisconsin River runs 92 miles un-dammed — the longest free-flowing section of river in the Midwest. We run it with jet-powered jon boats, reaching water that most anglers never see: golden sandbars, limestone bluffs, and some of the hardest-fighting smallmouth bass in the region. Full and half-day float trips with a freshly prepared sandbar lunch included. This is bucket-list water that happens to be right in your backyard.
Fish Camps
Eat, Sleep, Fish, Repeat
Wisconsin River System
ABOUT
Trout Camp in the Driftless. Crash Camp on the Wisconsin River. Our multi-day fish camp experiences go beyond a single day on the water — think cabin lodging, chef-quality streamside meals, and full days of guided fishing with a small group of like-minded anglers. These are the trips clients talk about for years. Spring and fall Trout Camp sessions fill early. If a fish camp has been on your list, now is the time to reach out.
Pike & Musky
Toothy Critters on the Fly
Wisconsin River System
ABOUT
Fall and Spring on the Wisconsin River means apex predators. Pike and musky move aggressively in these shoulder seasons, and targeting them on the fly is some of the most exciting fishing we offer. If you've chased musky on conventional gear and want to try the fly rod, or you're just looking for something with a little more teeth, this is your trip. May, September, and October dates go fast.

"I have fished with Black Earth Angling Co. every year for the last six. Kyle is as professional as it gets when it comes to fly fishing guides. He works hard to make sure that fly fisherman at all levels get the most out of their day on the water — whether it be advanced fly fishers looking for the next challenge, or beginners just starting their adventure."

WE’RE PART OF THIS COMMUNITY
Black Earth Angling Co. has been operating out of southwestern Wisconsin for over 13 years. We didn't follow the Driftless trend — we helped create it. Kyle and the team put the Lower Wisconsin River on the map as a world-class fly fishing destination long before it showed up on anyone's list, developing techniques, scouting water, and building a fishery reputation that now draws anglers from across the country.
But our roots in this community go deeper than the river. We created Drinking with Scissors, a Madison-area fly tying and conservation event that brings the local fishing community together every season. We're active in the conservation work that keeps these fisheries healthy and accessible. When you fish with us, you're supporting a guide service that's genuinely invested in the long-term health of the water we all love.
And when the rods are put away? We know where to eat. We know where to stay. Ask us — we'll point you right.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Not at all. Most of our clients are beginners or casual anglers. Your guide will teach you everything you need — casting, reading water, presentation — and we'll match the water to your skill level so you're set up to catch fish, not just practice.
-
Spring (April–May) is our most popular season for Driftless trout — Caddis hatches, Blue-Winged Olives, and technical dry fly fishing at its best. Summer brings smallmouth season on the Wisconsin River. Fall is streamer season — big fish and spectacular scenery before the season closes. There's no bad time to get out.
-
Terminal tackle, instruction, and local knowledge are always included. Full-day trips include a freshly prepared streamside lunch — our "Famous Cuisine" is something clients specifically mention in reviews. All you need to bring is a valid Wisconsin fishing license, appropriate clothing, and a willingness to have a good day on the water.
-
We'll send a full packing list after booking. The essentials are a Wisconsin fishing license, sunscreen, and clothes you don't mind getting wet. We handle rods, flies, tackle, and instruction — and full-day trips include a freshly prepared streamside lunch.
-
Yes. We regularly guide groups and can accommodate up to 6 anglers across multiple guides and boats. Get in touch for group availability and pricing — larger groups are some of our favorite days on the water. Groups larger than 6 anglers are possible with extra lead time.

As early as possible. Summer dates — especially June through August — fill fast, often before the season starts. If you have a specific window in mind, don't wait. We'd rather help you plan early than tell you we're full.
