Driftless Trout
Wisconsin's spring creeks are among the finest trout waters in the world. We know every one worth fishing.
ABOUT THE TRIP
The Driftless Region
Tucked into the hills of southwestern Wisconsin sits one of the most unusual landscapes in North America. While glaciers flattened most of the Midwest over thousands of years, the Driftless Area was left untouched — no glacial drift, no flat terrain, no lakes carved by retreating ice. What remained was something far more interesting: dramatic limestone bluffs, deep wooded valleys, and a vast underground network of springs that filter cold, clean water up through fractured rock and into more than 13,000 miles of spring creeks. That water stays a consistent 48–50°F year-round — cold enough for trout to thrive in July, warm enough to keep the creeks flowing all winter. The result is one of the greatest concentrations of wild trout water in the world, sitting quietly in the middle of the Midwest.
Wisconsin's Best Kept Secret
Most of that water doesn't look like much from the road. Driftless spring creeks run narrow — some barely wider than a sidewalk, others the width of a two-lane road. But size is deceiving. These streams hold wild brown trout and brook trout in densities that rival famous western fisheries, and the fish are not pushovers. The Driftless is technical fishing — educated trout, clear water, and tight casting lanes that reward patience and precision. We've spent years scouting these creeks in the off-season, and we know exactly which water fishes best at which time of year. What looked like a no-name ditch on a map might be the site of your best day on a trout stream.
Perfect for All Skill Levels
New to fly fishing? Start here. Driftless spring creeks are wade-able and intimate — you can see the fish, understand the water, and feel every cast. There's no better classroom for learning the fundamentals of trout fishing than a small, clear stream with rising fish in front of you. Experienced angler looking to sharpen your game? We have access to water that will challenge everything you think you know about presenting a fly. Either way, we're here to make sure your day on the creek is one you'll want to repeat. It's often said that if you can fish the Driftless effectively, you can fish anywhere in the world. We believe it.
The Driftless is at its best when you know where to look.
WHEN’S THE BEST TIME?
The honest answer is: any time. Wisconsin's Driftless trout season runs nearly 10 months — from early January through mid-October and each season fishes differently enough that regulars plan multiple trips a year.
Spring (April–May) Prime time for technical dry fly fishing. Water temps are ideal, wild trout are actively feeding, and the creeks are uncrowded. Early season Caddis and Blue-Winged Olive hatches are among the best in the Midwest. Streamside vegetation is still low, fish are hungry, and sight-fishing opportunities are at their peak.
Summer (June–August) Terrestrial season — hoppers, ants, and beetles fished tight to undercut banks. This is the most visual, exciting trout fishing of the year. Late summer brings Trico hatches and some of the biggest surface-feeding activity of the season.
Fall (September–October) Streamer season. Brown trout become aggressive and territorial as water temps drop, and the Driftless hills turn spectacular. Some of the largest fish of the year are landed in October. If you only make one trip, fall is hard to argue with.

“Our experience with Black Earth Angling was incredible! Kyle was very patient with myself and my 9 year old. He explained everything we needed to know about fly fishing, water clarity, trout habits and much more. I highly recommend.”

DRIFTLESS TROUT FAQs
-
Walk and wade — this is not fishing from a boat. You can expect to fish from both the bank and in the stream. Wading is relatively easy in the Driftless, with no slippery round rocks to navigate. The water is often waist deep or less, making it accessible for anglers of all experience levels.
-
Yes — and honestly, this is one of the best trips you can take as a first-timer. Driftless spring creeks are intimate, visual, and forgiving enough to learn on. We'll work with you on the basics from the first cast and make sure you leave with skills you can actually use on your own. A lot of our most loyal repeat clients started out not knowing which end of the rod to hold.
-
We include use of our equipment on every trip, but we do not provide waders or boots. That said, waders aren't always necessary. If the weather is mild, we recommend wet wading in synthetic pants (no cotton or denim) and close-toed shoes you don't mind getting wet — an old pair of hiking boots works great. Most of our fishing can also be done from the bank, and knee-high rubber boots are a perfectly good option. If you're unsure what to bring, check out our packing list or just get in touch and we'll sort it out.

Please let us know when you reach out. Trout fishing in the Driftless does require walking roughly a half mile on uneven terrain, but some streams are more accessible than others. With enough notice, we can usually find a spot that works. If wading isn't an option at all, our Wisconsin River bass trips are a great alternative — it's a full day on the water from a comfortable jet boat.

The best way to picture a Driftless spring creek is somewhere between a sidewalk and a two-lane road in width. They're all very wadable, but few are large enough to float a boat. What they lack in size they more than make up for in character — and fish.
-
If you don't mind layering up, absolutely. Driftless spring creeks never freeze which means the trout don't stop eating and neither do we. Winter fishing means no crowds, crystal-clear water, and fish that haven't seen a fly in weeks. It's one of the most unique experiences in Midwest fly fishing. Get in touch and we'll help you figure out if it's the right fit.
-
As early as you can. Spring dates — especially April and May — fill up fast, often before the season even starts. If you have a specific date or window in mind, don't wait. We'd rather help you plan early than tell you we're full.
We're easier to get to than you might think.
